How to license and insure a vehicle in Bermuda

Getting a new vehicle is exciting — but there are some crucial steps you’ll need to take to get your vehicle road-ready if you plan on driving in Bermuda. Find out how to license and insure your vehicle before you get on the road.

Purchase a motor insurance policy for your new vehicle

Motor insurance is mandatory for all drivers in Bermuda. Before you can license your vehicle with the (TCD) or drive it on the island, you need to purchase motor insurance. The TCD requires all Bermuda drivers to purchase third party liability coverage, at minimum, while comprehensive coverage is optional.

What is third party liability coverage?

Third party liability coverage protects you if you’re held legally responsible for injuries or damage to someone else’s vehicle or property due to a collision. Third party liability coverage doesn’t cover any damage to your own vehicle.

What is comprehensive car insurance coverage?

While comprehensive motor insurance coverage isn’t legally required if you own your vehicle, it is highly recommended. This coverage protects your vehicle in the event of loss or damage because of a collision, theft, vandalism, fire, lightning, riots, or other malicious acts. Some owners of older vehicles may decide to opt out of comprehensive coverage to save on insurance costs — but if you decide to opt out, remember that you’ll need to cover the costs yourself if your vehicle is damaged or stolen.

License your vehicle with the TCD

After you purchase a motor insurance policy for your new vehicle, you’ll need to register it with the TCD right away. This registration requires an examination of your vehicle that that includes an emissions test. You’ll also need to provide some important paperwork about yourself and your vehicle, and you’ll have to pay fees to register your vehicle and receive your annual vehicle licence.

Documents required to register your vehicle in Bermuda

  • A completed vehicle registration form
  • Proof of Bermuda residence
  • Proof of insurance for your vehicle
  • Proof of ownership for your vehicle

Requirements may differ for cars and bikes, and additional documentation may be needed. Check with the TCD to find out exactly what’s required for your situation.

Remember to complete an inspection and renew your vehicle licence every year

Private car owners must pass an annual inspection. You must complete this inspection and renew your vehicle licence by your birthday every year. Bike licences are renewed on the month of purchase. Your vehicle needs to be insured and licensed annually before you can operate it on the road.
